Know Thyself: How to Understand Your Two Worlds Through Astrology
“As Above, So Below”: How Your Sun and Moon Signs Shape Your Two Realities
The age-old idiom, “know thyself,” is the first and foremost step to any spiritual enlightenment, but how many of us really know ourselves, especially all aspects of ourselves?
One vital area in understanding who we are is our astrological identity, also known as our natal chart. It’s important to note that astrology has been attacked1 by scientific and religious authorities, so much so that it has been cast into the realm of the abyss, even though it contains pretty informative insights and has been praised by prominent geniuses like Carl Jung.
In today’s article, we will provide a high-level overview of how our astrological makeup helps us see the multiple sides of us. Then, we’ll dive deeper into discussing our two halves: the self that interacts with the world and the self that interacts with ourselves. And to close, we’ll discuss what happens when there’s a disconnect and what can be done to heal that.
Within the article, the reader will learn the following insights:

The Reality of Astrology As Behavioral Science
As a Christian, astrology, zodiacs, and anything of the sort were seen as demonic and were frowned upon. From a scientific point of view, it was viewed as a pseudoscience or a superstition. Let’s cast all perceptions of the topic aside and instead look at its practicality.
Astrology is an actual behavioral science that studies the patterns of human personality and behavior based on the positions of the planets and the stars at the time of birth. Astrology can reveal a person’s general tendencies and potentials and the challenges and opportunities they may face. Simply put, based on the location of the Sun, Moon, and stars at the time an individual was born into this world can determine how that individual may act in the world. If he was born in the summertime, he may be more energetic — in the wintertime, he may be more reclusive.
Astrology can also show us the population patterns that emerge from the collective influence of the celestial bodies. If we can understand individual tendencies based on the placement of the stars, then we can realize population effects based on the astrological makeup. For example, if, historically speaking, the population is more energized during the spring, we may have more revolts, revolutions, and transformations occurring during a specific time of the year.
However, astrology is not a one-size-fits-all system. Each person has a unique astrological landscape that consists of various factors, such as the Sun sign (your main zodiac sign, where the Sun was when you were born), the Moon sign, the Ascendant, the Midheaven, and the planetary aspects. These factors form a complex and dynamic map of the individual’s psyche, and here is where we shall start our journey.
How Our Behavioral Profile Interacts with the World
I argue that our astrological, or better yet, behavioral profile, results from our perception of reality. Our perception is shaped by our five senses, which are influenced by our Sun sign2. Our Sun sign represents how we express ourselves, interact with the external world, and pursue our goals. It also reflects how we are seen by others and how we come off to others. Our sun side is our public image.
Depending on our Sun sign, our five senses can be more or less dominant, more or less refined, and more or less compatible with the environment.
For example, a person with a Sun in a fire sign (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius) will have fiery senses, which are energetic, passionate, and spontaneous. They will seek excitement, adventure, and challenge in the world and be seen as confident, charismatic, and courageous.
On the other hand, a person with a Sun in a water sign (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces) will have watery senses, which are calm, intuitive, and emotional. They will seek security, connection, and meaning in the world and be seen as sensitive, compassionate, and creative.
The same environment, but based on our signs, we experience and interact with the environment differently. This is our external world and how we interact with it. However, reality is made up of our external and internal factors, so when we go internally, we start with our thoughts.
Our reality is shaped by our thoughts, which are influenced by our Moon sign. Our Moon sign represents how we feel, react, and cope with our inner world. It also reflects our subconscious, our instincts, and our habits.
Depending on our Moon sign, our thoughts can be more or less stable, more or less flexible, and more or less rational.
For example, a person with a Moon in an earth sign (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn) will have earthy, practical, realistic, and grounded thoughts. They will value material security, order, and efficiency and be seen as reliable, diligent, and loyal.
On the other hand, a person with a Moon in an air sign (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius) will have airy thoughts that are curious, inventive, and abstract. They will value intellectual stimulation, communication, and diversity and be seen as witty, sociable, and original.
We now see how our external world, influenced by our senses, is ruled by our Sun sign, and we’ve seen how our internal world, influenced by our thoughts, is ruled by our Moon sign. Let’s continue to see how both sides work together.
Our Two Worlds
We live in two worlds: one of senses and one of thoughts, or one of material and one of forms. These two worlds correspond to our two sides: one that thinks and one that experiences. These two sides are also reflected as our ego and our soul.
